Digital Detox in Canggu: Reconnecting Beyond the Screen

July 27, 2026

Most holidays begin the same way. You arrive, check into your hotel, connect to the Wi-Fi, and send a quick message to let everyone know you’ve made it safely.
Then the holiday begins. Or at least, that’s what we think.
In reality, many of us never really switch off.
We answer a few emails over breakfast, reply to messages while waiting for coffee, and check social media between one place and the next. Before we realise it, we’re experiencing a new destination while still following the same habits we thought we left at home. Canggu has a funny way of changing that. Not because anyone tells you to put your phone away, but because your attention naturally shifts somewhere else.

The Little Things Start to Matter

It might begin with your morning coffee. You notice the bakery next door pulling fresh pastries from the oven. Someone asks if the empty chair beside you is free. A conversation starts. Thirty minutes pass without either of you looking at a screen. Later, you walk towards the beach. A local points you towards a small warung instead of the café you were searching for. You decide to follow the recommendation. It turns out to be one of the best meals of your trip. None of it was planned.

Not Every Moment Needs a Photo

Of course, we all like taking pictures while we travel. Photos help us remember where we’ve been. But some moments are better left exactly as they are. Watching surfers wait for the next wave. Listening to the rain from inside a café. Sitting with friends long after the coffee cups are empty because the conversation is still going. Those are the moments that stay with you long after the holiday ends.

Looking Up More Often

One of the nicest things about Canggu is that there’s always something happening around you. Someone is learning to surf for the first time. The sunset slowly draws people towards the beach without anyone needing to organise it. When you start paying attention to those little moments, checking your phone becomes less important. Not because you decided to take a digital detox. Simply because you found something more interesting.

Ending the Day at The Komu

Back at The Komu, the day continues at its own pace. Some guests head straight to the pool after the beach. Others sit in the lobby chatting about where they’ve been or where they’re planning to eat that evening.
A laptop closes for the day.
A book opens.
Someone orders another coffee.
There is no schedule to follow and nowhere you need to be straight away.
Sometimes, that’s enough.

Final Thought

Digital detox doesn’t have to mean switching your phone off for an entire holiday. Maybe it’s as simple as forgetting to check it for a while. Because the moments you’ll remember most probably won’t be the ones on your screen. They’ll be the conversations you didn’t expect, the places you found by chance, and the afternoons that lasted longer than you planned. Those are the stories worth taking home.
